Americans Are Still Worried About Layoffs
According To Decision Analyst’s Job Anxiety Index

Arlington, Texas—The level of job-market anxiety experienced by Americans held steady in March, according to the Job Anxiety Index compiled by Decision Analyst. The index is based on a monthly survey that measures how worried consumers are about their own job situation and the job market in general. The index moved slightly from 19.2 in February to 19.0 in March.

The index reflects the percentage of unemployed and underemployed workers, plus those who are “very worried” about losing their jobs.

“Consumers currently appear to have a wait-and-see attitude on the economy, possibly because the economic signals are mixed. The new home market has continued cooling, with new home sales for February falling more than 10% from the prior month. In March the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee voted to raise interest rates,” said Jerry W. Thomas, President and CEO of Decision Analyst, a marketing research and marketing consulting firm. “On the positive side, most analysts feel that economic growth has picked up in the first quarter of 2006, after an anemic fourth quarter of 2005. So until the economic data becomes clearer, consumers may stay in a holding pattern, viewing the job market with caution.”

Methodology

The Decision Analyst Job Anxiety Index is based on a monthly Internet survey of several thousand households balanced by gender, age, and geography, conducted from the 20th to the 27th of each month. The Job Anxiety Index is immediately calculated from unemployment, part-time employment, and job security, using a sophisticated model. The result is a snapshot of current U.S. employment/anxiety, as seen through the eyes of representative consumers. Decision Analyst also conducts concurrent surveys in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, China, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, Spain, United Kingdom, and Venezuela.
