VCRS Now In Eighty Percent Of Homes, Survey Shows
Arlington, Texas Slightly more than 80 percent of American households now
have videocassette recorders, according to a recent national survey by Decision
Analyst, Inc.
In a survey late last year of 10,000 randomly selected--but statistically
balanced--households, 80.8% of households said they had a videocassette
recorder (VCR). Broken down by region, VCRs were found to be most popular in
the West, with 82.5% of households saying they had the equipment. The West was
followed by the Northeast and the Midwest, with the South having the fewest
VCRs.
By income, households earning more than $40,000 were most likely to have a VCR
(87.6% of households), according to the survey. Households least likely to have
a VCR (67.4%) were those with incomes of $25,000 or less.
Other demographic data show that VCRs are most popular among those 35 to 44
years old (88.5%), and least popular among those 55 or older (68%).
Finally, the more educated a consumer is, the more likely he or she will own a
VCR, according to the survey. Eighty-six percent of respondents with
postgraduate education said they had a household VCR, while only 73.9% of those
with a high school education or less had the equipment.
"What is particularly interesting is the high percentage of households with
a VCR," said Jerry W. Thomas, President/CEO of Decision Analyst, Inc.
"Regardless of household income or geographic region, one almost has the
sense that a VCR is viewed as a necessity, and not as a luxury item."
This survey, conducted in late 1995, has an error margin of plus or minus one
percent.
